Chicken Parmesan is one of those meals that always feels like a good idea. Crispy coating, rich marinara, melted cheese, and that satisfying moment when your fork cuts through all the layers. It’s comforting, familiar, and just a little indulgent in the best way. This baked version keeps everything you love but skips the frying. You still get that golden crunch and plenty of flavor, just without the extra oil or standing over a hot pan.
Baked Chicken Parmesan
Serves: 4
Total Time: About 35 minutes
Ingredients
Fresh basil, for garnish
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, pounded thin
1 cup breadcrumbs
½ cup grated Parmesan
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 eggs, beaten
½ cup flour
1½ cups marinara sauce
1 cup shredded mozzarella
Salt and pepper
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
In a shallow dish, mix together the breadcrumbs, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Set up your dredging station with three bowls: one with flour, one with the beaten eggs, and one with the breadcrumb mixture.
Coat each piece of chicken in the flour, then dip into the eggs, and finally press into the breadcrumb mixture, making sure it’s well coated.
Place the breaded chicken on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly spray or drizzle the tops with olive oil.
Bake for 15 minutes.
Remove from the oven, spoon marinara sauce over each piece, and top with shredded mozzarella.
Return to the oven for another 10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
Finish with fresh basil and serve with spaghetti or a simple green salad.
The Step That Makes It Work
Pounding the chicken thin is what really makes this dish come together. It helps the chicken cook evenly and gives you that perfect balance of crispy coating and tender meat in every bite. If you have a meat mallet, great. If not, a rolling pin works just as well. Just place the chicken between two sheets of plastic wrap and gently pound it to about half an inch thick.
Baking gives you that same satisfying crunch without the extra step of frying. It’s less messy, easier to manage, and still delivers on texture and flavor. A quick drizzle of oil on top helps the coating crisp up beautifully in the oven. This is the kind of meal that feels a little special but doesn’t require much effort. It’s perfect for a weeknight when you want something comforting, or for a dinner that feels just a bit more put together.
