There’s something magical about the way kids seem to have endless energy, while we, as grandparents, often wish we could bottle even half of it. But here’s the truth: moving more doesn’t have to mean exhausting workouts. It can be fun, simple, and best of all, something you and your grandkids can do together.
Staying active as a family is more than just exercise. It’s about creating memories, building traditions, and showing your grandkids that movement can be joyful. I’ve found that the best “fitness moments” with my own granddaughter don’t look like workouts at all. They’re games, laughter, and challenges that sneak in exercise without anyone even realizing it.
Turning Everyday Play Into Movement
One of my favorite tricks is to weave fitness into activities we’re already doing. For example, if we’re at the park, I’ll turn walking from the swings to the slide into a “marching band parade.” She loves pretending we’re playing instruments while lifting our knees high. Suddenly, we’ve gone from strolling to doing a mini workout and she’s giggling the whole way.
At home, even a simple “dance party” in the living room counts as exercise. We put on a favorite playlist, and for ten minutes, we twirl, hop, and clap to the beat. It doesn’t feel like a workout, but by the end, both of us are breathing a little heavier and smiling ear to ear.
Simple Fitness Games Grandkids Love
Balloon Volleyball: All you need is a balloon and some open space. It keeps kids moving, improves hand-eye coordination, and trust me, you’ll break a sweat trying to keep the balloon off the floor!
Animal Walks: Pretend to be animals together and hop like a frog, waddle like a duck, crawl like a bear. It’s silly, but it gets the heart rate up quickly.
Treasure Hunt: Hide small objects around the house or yard, then give clues or a map. Kids run, bend, and stretch without realizing they’re exercising.
Making It Easy With Fitness Helpers
A few inexpensive tools can make staying active even more fun and structured. Here are some ideas that have worked well for grandparents I know:
Kid-Friendly Jump Ropes – Perfect for short bursts of energy and coordination practice.
Foam Yoga Mats – Great for stretching together or rolling out for floor games.
Balance Stepping Stones – These turn your living room into an obstacle course that improves balance and core strength.
Resistance Bands – Safe, lightweight, and fun for “superhero” pulling games with older grandkids.
Mini Trampolines – A hit with children, and surprisingly fun (and joint-friendly) for grandparents too.
The Real Benefit: Bonding Through Movement
I keep a couple of these tucked away at home. On rainy days, they’re lifesavers. One afternoon, my granddaughter and I set up the balance stepping stones and pretended the floor was “lava.” She was squealing with excitement, and before I knew it, we had spent nearly an hour jumping, stretching, and laughing together. Later that evening, I realized how much exercise I’d actually gotten in without once feeling like I was “working out.” That’s the magic of making movement playful, it doesn’t feel like fitness, but the benefits are there.
Yes, staying active helps our bodies stay strong and healthy. But for me, the deeper benefit is connection. When I’m down on the floor pretending to be a crab or joining in a silly dance routine, I’m not just helping my granddaughter burn off energy, I’m showing her that I’m present, engaged, and willing to share in her world.
These moments matter. They build trust, joy, and memories that she’ll carry with her long after the balloon deflates or the trampoline cools down.
