Grandparent’s Secret: How to Make Any Home Kid-Ready in a Day

Grandparents are no longer just the weekend babysitters or holiday hosts. More and more, they’re becoming a daily part of their grandchildren’s lives. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 2.3 million grandparents are the primary caregivers for their grandchildren, and millions more provide steady help with after-school pickups, summer supervision, meals, and more. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 children under age 5 with employed mothers is primarily cared for by a grandparent, totaling about 4.5 million kids.

That makes creating a grandkid-friendly home a real need, not just a nice-to-have. Whether your grandkids come over once a week or stay multiple days, a welcoming setup can make a world of difference.

How to Create a Grandkid-Friendly Home (Even With Limited Space)

We spoke with Naomi Coe, award-winning designer and founder of Little Crown Interiors, who specializes in child-friendly spaces that work for multigenerational living. She shared some helpful ideas for building a safe, stylish, and flexible grandkid-friendly home.

“The first step is to determine the needs of the child or children,” says Coe. “What age are they, and what do they need or want to do while in your care?”

For younger kids, that might mean a soft area to play or a designated space for feeding. For older ones, it could be a homework station or an outdoor play spot. Don’t have a desk? A kitchen counter with a portable homework caddy works just fine.

Simple Storage that works for everyone

Whether you live in a spacious home or a cozy condo, having a designated spot for your grandkids’ things makes a big difference. “Even if it’s just a basket in the corner or a small closet, keeping toys in one place helps everyone stay organized,” says Coe.

Her favorite solution? Storage that does double duty. “I’m a huge fan of accent furniture that doubles as storage, like benches and ottomans,” she explains. “They offer extra seating when the family is over, and you can toss toys in for easy cleanup.”

For those with a little more room, try a cube organizer with bins or a versatile storage ottoman. These options make toy rotation easier and give grandkids a sense of ownership over their space. Even the smallest effort, like a dedicated basket, sends a clear message: this is your space too.

Keep It Safe, Stylish, and Yours

A common concern among grandparents? “I want my home to still feel like mine.” According to Coe, that’s absolutely possible.

“Keep it free of clutter and toys,” she advises. “Use covered storage, and teach kids where things go. It helps them learn responsibility and helps you keep your sanity.” Not only does this maintain your sense of order, but it also creates a safer environment. “Nobody wants to trip on a stray toy truck!”

Sharing your space can be a valuable teaching moment, too. “Work with the children so they know where things go and why it matters,” she says. “It helps them learn to respect someone else’s living space.”

To support your style, choose washable area rugs to protect your floors, and opt for furniture with easy-to-clean fabrics that make cleanup simple without sacrificing your aesthetic.

Make Kids Feel at Home with Small Touches

Even without a full bedroom, you can help grandkids feel truly at home with a few thoughtful details:

  • A cozy book nook or reading basket filled with kid-friendly books

  • A bathroom caddy that’s easy to tuck away when not in use

  • A drawer or shelf with their own colorful dishes and spill-proof cups

  • A cozy reading nook with a soft blanket and pillow

“These simple touches can go a long way,” says Naomi Coe. “They help kids feel like they belong and make caregiving easier for grandparents.”

Making Room for a grandkid-friendly home

As more grandparents step up to support their families, having a home that works for all generations becomes not just convenient, but meaningful. Whether you’re watching your grandkids full-time or just a few afternoons a week, your space can reflect the love and support you bring to their lives.
