A Healthy Turkey Pasta Dinner

Turkey broccoli pasta is the kind of meal that comes together quickly but still feels like a real dinner when you sit down to eat it. You’ve got pasta for comfort, broccoli for freshness, lean turkey to make it filling, and just enough butter, garlic, and Parmesan to pull everything together.

It’s also one of those meals that gives you a little more than comfort. Broccoli adds fiber, vitamins, and a fresh bite, while lean ground turkey helps make the meal more satisfying with protein. That combination can help keep you fuller longer, which is part of what makes this such a useful dinner to keep in rotation.

It’s practical without feeling plain, and that’s part of what makes it such a useful recipe to keep around. On a busy night, when you don’t feel like overthinking dinner, this is exactly the kind of meal that earns its place in the regular rotation.

WHy this meal earns a spot in your rotation

This is the kind of dinner that works because it’s easy to make, easy to keep ingredients around for, and still feels like a full meal at the end of the day. The pasta makes it comforting, while the broccoli and lean turkey help keep it from feeling too heavy. You still get something warm and satisfying, but with a little more balance than a lot of quick pasta dinners tend to offer.

It also has a nice mix of protein, vegetables, and starch, which helps it feel more complete and filling without needing a heavy sauce or a long list of ingredients to get there.

The Turkey Broccoli Pasta Recipe

Ingredients arranged on a countertop: pasta shells, broccoli florets, a slab of butter, ground meat, grated cheese, minced garlic, red pepper flakes, half a lemon, and a bottle of olive oil.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces medium shell pasta
  • 12 ounces fresh broccoli florets, chopped
  • 1 pound ground turkey (or ground turkey breast)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper, optional
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ¼ cup reserved pasta water

How to Make It

Cook the pasta and broccoli

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the shell pasta according to the package directions. During the last few minutes of cooking, add the broccoli so it becomes tender without getting overly soft.

Before draining, reserve about ¼ cup of the pasta water.

Brown the turkey

While the pasta cooks, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and crushed red pepper, if using, and cook just until fragrant.

Add the ground turkey and break it up with a spoon as it cooks. Sprinkle in the salt and cook until the meat is browned and fully cooked through.

Bring everything together Add the drained pasta and broccoli to the skillet with the turkey. Pour in the reserved pasta water and stir everything together so the ingredients blend and the Parmesan has something to melt into.

Turn off the heat and stir in the grated Parmesan until everything is lightly coated.

Serve while warm

Spoon into bowls and serve right away. If you like, finish with a little extra Parmesan or cracked black pepper on top. If you want a little brightness, a squeeze of lemon at the end works really well. If you want a little more flavor, chopped onion can be added with the garlic. And if you’re trying to use up extra vegetables, spinach or zucchini can slip in easily too.

Keep in Mind

A simple recipe like this doesn’t need much, but a few small choices can help it turn out even better.

Try not to overcook the broccoli. You want it tender, but still bright and fresh-looking. That keeps the whole dish from feeling tired.

Also, don’t skip the reserved pasta water. It may not seem important, but it helps the Parmesan coat the pasta more smoothly and keeps everything from drying out once it’s all stirred together.

And if your turkey is especially lean, an extra splash of pasta water or a little more butter at the end can help bring the whole dish together.

What to Serve With It

This is a complete dinner on its own, but if you want to round it out a little more, it goes well with a simple green salad, garlic bread, sliced tomatoes, or fresh fruit.

It’s also a good one to make when you want leftovers the next day, which is not always the case with quick pasta dinners. Hungry for more? You’ll find plenty to love in our Food section.
