What’s in Granny’s Bag? A Tradition of Joy

Every grandparent has a signature touch, something that makes visits unforgettable. For Jan Schmidt, that magic came in the form of a simple tradition now lovingly remembered as “the magic bag” by her grandkids. It wasn’t expensive or elaborate. Just a tote full of knick-knacks, surprise treasures, and heart. Yet, it became a source of joy, imagination, and deep family connection.

For many grandparents reading this, the story may already feel familiar. You might have your own version without even realizing it. A special drawer, a pocket full of surprises, a routine that only happens when you arrive. These small rituals often become the moments grandchildren remember most, not because of the object, but because of how they felt in that moment.

In Jan’s own words, here is the story of how her Magic Bag became a cherished part of her grandparenting journey.

The Magic Bag

By: Jan Schmidt

Being a Grammy has been both fun and fulfilling. The journey has brought so many special memories. One of my favorites is the Magic Bag.

I remember the first time I came to visit and brought the Magic Bag. It was just a simple tote. What made it magical was that it was filled with toys. These were toys their parents often called “junk.” You know the kind, cheap little items usually displayed on a wall. But kids love those toys. Small balls, toy rubber soldiers, yo-yos, bracelets, necklaces, and more.

My grands would come running with huge smiles as soon as they spotted the tote. They would shout, “The Magic Bag!” again and again. They couldn’t wait to reach in and pick out a new toy, something that would keep them busy and happy for hours.

You might wonder how a basic tote, simply called the Magic Bag, could become such a joyful memory for me. I truly believe it was the love I packed into that bag that made it magical. My grandchildren could feel that love each time they reached inside.

Even now, the Magic Bag remains one of my most treasured memories.

Why the Magic Bag Works

What gives a tote full of inexpensive toys so much meaning? It isn’t about what’s inside the bag, it’s about what those moments create. The Magic Bag becomes a spark for connection, laughter, and imaginative play that bridges generations.

How to Create Your Own Magic Bag

You don’t need anything fancy. Start with a reusable tote. Fill it with small, age-appropriate surprises like stickers, toy cars, bouncy balls, costume jewelry, coloring books, or mini puzzles. Change it up now and then to keep it fresh and exciting.

The cost doesn’t matter. What counts is the surprise, the smile, and the moment.

As Jan so beautifully reminds us, meaningful family traditions often start with the simplest things. A tote bag filled with little trinkets and a grandparent’s love can become a lifelong memory. If you’re looking for an easy, joyful way to connect with your grandchildren, consider starting your version of the Magic Bag. You may be surprised just how magical it becomes.
